In 2012, Calgary-based electronic music producer Ryan Hall created Soulier. Ryan started hismusical journey at 1994, as a bass player performing with classic and jazz band in his hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. As a result of his exposure to classical and jazz, his musical style was solidified in improvisational techniques and theory – which has become a hallmark of his liveelectronic performance as a DJ.
In July 2014, Hall completed his first tour in China. 2015 was a tumultuous and emotional year during which his first full album titled Expansions was nominated as Best Electronic Album of theYear by the Western Canadian Music Awards.
2016 is a busy year for Soulier, with another tour in Mainland China in Summer, and a coincidingEP titled “Mandarin”, which is being release in support of the tour. He will be holding musicproduction seminars, and performing in several underground electronic music venues throughout China.
This summer will be my third tour of China, so I wanted to create an EP specifically for my Chinese fans. The Mandarin EP was inspired by the culture, people, and language of China. My favourite track on the EP is called Snape in Heaven, which was written in myhotel in Beijing last year. It is an uplifting melodic electronica style track that I wanted tocapture the feeling of happiness and wonder that I get when being in China.

Could you talk about your new release: Mandarin EP?

I was getting bored of just being a regular DJ. I wanted to create music live as opposed to playing music that was already written. Before I was a DJ, I was a bass player in many different classical, jazz, and rock bands. 640-4I love to improvise when I perform, so I decided to change to live DJ performance to allow more creativity in the music that I create.
Like a guitar player who might have a solo in a performance, I solo sometimes in my live sets with electronic instruments. I also love to record new sounds when I am travelling, so the audience will hear things I record on the streets, like spoken mandarin, or even Chinese instruments in my music that are performed live. It’s different, because it is never the same performance twice.

What makes your live show different from all the other electronic music artists?

You have done China tours before, in 2014 and 2015. What is the biggest difference between doing show in China and other countries like US or Canada?

That’s the feeling I have noticed when performing in China, is that there is a connection even though the language is so different. The biggest difference is that there are no dice in Canadian clubs.

What is your biggest inspiration when making music?

My biggest inspiration comes from the people I meet everywhere I go. I get inspired by hearing your stories and thoughts, which often inspire me and the music I write. My music is a reflection of the inspiration. BoyAlVvIUAA-arz.jpg-large

Tell us something about your upcoming China tour

This will be the biggest tour of China that I will have done. I will start in Ningbo on June 17th followed by Shanghai, Changsha at the Strawberry Music Festival, Guilin, Wuhan, Dali, and Shenzhen. I think I will also be playing in Guangzhou. I’ll be in China for three weeksand am really looking forward to meeting everyone. I should also thank my friend Jami eOmer (AKA DJ Passenger with Electric Underground in Changsha) for making this tour happen.       Screen Shot 2016-06-17 at 12.16.38 PM
